Professor Francie Ostrower will discuss her recently published research brief Millennials are not a MonolithEven before the Covid-19 pandemic shuttered performances, nonprofit arts organizations faced significant challenges, including stagnant or declining attendance, and attracting younger audiences has been a concern. But is a demographically-defined age segment, in this case, millennials, necessarily a meaningful group for audience-building purposes? This presentation addresses that question by offering interim findings from research on the experiences of a group of performing arts organizations in The Wallace Foundation’s Building Audiences for Sustainability initiative. Francie Ostrower is Principal Investigator of a multiyear evaluation of the initiative, being conducted at The University of Texas at Austin, and commissioned and funded by The Wallace Foundation
