Especially at a time of forced reinvention in the orchestra field due to COVID-19, AAAE, its members, and arts administration scholars are well-positioned to serve as resources to the field of orchestra management. In addition to challenges associated with the pandemic, the orchestra field in the United States is currently engaged in a reckoning over its history as a mostly white and elitist art form.
During this session (led by an orchestra manager and an arts administration faculty member), orchestra management research and scholarship as components of the development of internal orchestra stakeholders will be explored.

As a nascent sub-field of arts management, orchestra management is similarly under-theorized. Most useful scholarship on the topic is generated and distributed by the League of American Orchestras in the form of white papers, advocacy documents, and commissioned research. Given the League’s particular function as a service organization, such scholarship has limited reach and utility. Additionally, there continues to be a wide chasm between orchestra management practitioners and arts administration scholars. In fact, a 2016 survey of orchestra executives (conducted by one of our panelists) revealed that 89.2% of respondents were not aware of AAAE.

At a time when the entire arts and culture industry must reimagine, reconnect, and renew, this session aims to facilitate new connections between orchestra management and the study thereof. Largely populated by managers who learned “on the job,” the potential for further development of scholarship related specifically to orchestra management will be a focus of the session, as will examples of existing resources in the orchestra management field.
