The live entertainment sector has seen continued economic growth in recent years as monetization of recorded music has dwindled and subsequently forced artists and entertainers to perform as much as they can. With low margins in the audio streaming space, most performers rely on ticket sales and merchandise for the majority of their revenue. 2020 was growing to be one of the highest grossing years for the live entertainment space until the pandemic immediately derailed all concerts for the year. In the wake of cancelled performances and dwindling revenue streams, the landscape became flooded with livestreaming platforms and artists faced immense pressure to continue to create and deliver content in an effort to stay culturally relevant and engaged with fans. Livestreaming might have once been considered to be a temporary fix for the lack of traditional performances but now that the space has grown, it will have a radical and long-lasting shift in how the performing arts space will operate in the future. This presentation will examine the shifting relationship of fans and performers in a virtual world and how this affects space vs place, detailing the possibilities of new forms of fan engagement and opportunities for the superfan, and argue for the adoption of virtual events in the performing arts world post covid.
