The following research creates an overview of the legal policies and resources that support artists working in new media. This research considers the ways in which artists understand intellectual property and how their work can help advance legal adaptation. This paper presents the perspective that the law is a living entity in which artists, especially those working with emerging technologies, need not comply with the system, but rather should be encouraged in ways that support adaptation. The paper ultimately envisions the arts administrator as a partner to artists whose work pushes for copyright reform. In this way, advocacy is seen as a creative avenue to help artists imagine how legality can be expanded and developed to adapt to legal systems often perceived as a strict power. The desire to create this position stems from a perceived lack of support for practicing new media artists and the disadvantages emanating from technological advancements. Every artist needs a champion, someone to advocate for them so that they may have the time and resources to keep creating art work. And there is certainly room in advocacy for voicing changes in societal values.
